At Broadside, Pandy and I managed to get a Trench Offensive game in. This should help players understand the first raid in the rulebook. Only using the starter set miniatures on our board, we managed a hotly contested trench raid.
We played with the backstory, The trenches were German, and they had recently been taken by a very small British attack. However, the Germans were making a plucky counter-attack.
Pandy’s Trench Offensive German List
Pandy had the advantage from the start as he wrote the game. However, his list was pretty basic. One German Junior Officer (Hans) and two German Privates (Paul & Walter).
Clare’s Trench Offensive British List
My list was more the same, nice basic demo game team. One British Junior Officer (Rupert) and two British privates (Robert and Reggie).
First Round
Initiative Phase
The first round was when Pandy rolled the best and gained the initiative for the first round. However, this didn’t translate into a useful event.
Event Phase
He rolled “reinforcements”. He couldn’t use that, so nothing happened.
Movement Phase
In the movement phase, the Germans were going around the British sides looking for them, which the British tried to grab as much food as possible.
Combat Phase
Ranged Step
Rupert was on lookout duty. He stood out-of-the trench for more of a view. However, he was cut down by a very lucky German Private (Paul) who took the advantage of being out of the trench at the same time. Rupert fell off the bridge alerting the British privates of a counter-attack. Doing his job even after death. He was a great officer.
No one else managed to shoot this round.
Melee Step
Nothing happened in the round.
Morale Phase
The British private Reggie who did see it, didn’t seem to mind, Rupert dying. What a steadfast private!
Second Round
Initiative Phase
I managed to win the initiative phase.
Event Phase
Pandy’s unlucky German private Paul, tasted some Iron Rations and could no longer harm anymore British soldiers.
Movement Phase
With the British Tommies knowing a counter-attack was on, they moved towards the back of the trench. Ready to attack the Germans back out of the trench, as the Hans and Walter moved closer to the British positions.
Combat Phase
Ranged Step
No combat happened this round
Melee Step
Nothing happened in the round.
Morale Phase
Walter after seeing Paul disappear didn’t fail his morale check and continued on as normal.
Third Round
Initiative Phase
I managed to lose the initiative this round and as such Pandy was ready for his counter-attack actions.
Event Phase
More Iron Rations fell into the trench taking out Robert with a boom!
Movement Phase
Everyone still on the board moved even closer, the trench was a hive of activity.
Combat Phase
Ranged Step
No combat happened this round
Melee Step
Nothing happened in the round.
Morale Phase
Reggie didn’t mind Robert going either. Maybe Reggie already has PTSD?
Fourth Round
Initiative Phase
This round was the most important, all miniatures now in position to attack and with little time left in the game, I knew I had to win back the initiative. However, Pandy kept it.
Event Phase
Pandy rolled his dice and got Heinz as a reinforcement.
Movement Phase
While the Germans moved slowly forward. Reggie charged headlong into combat with Walter.
Combat Phase
Ranged Step
No shooting could happen this round
Melee Step
The melee was fast and brutal. Reggie clearly shaken by the raid managed to swing wildly as Walter saved against the attack. However, Reggie wasn’t alert enough and didn’t save against the counter swing. Dying in the German trench with cheese in his pockets.
Morale Phase
No need for this.
Germans Won.
